A strange thing happens when you actually build with artificial intelligence rather than talk about it. The closer you get to the machine, the smaller the claims become, and the further you sit from it, the larger they grow. The people on stages describing systems on the edge of general intelligence are almost never the people writing the code. They are the people raising the money.
Understand what these systems actually are, because the mechanism explains everything. A large language model predicts the next word. That is the whole engine. It was trained on an enormous body of human text, and its single function is to guess, with remarkable skill, what word most plausibly comes next given everything before it. There is no understanding underneath. There is no store of verified truth it consults. There is a vast statistical map of how human language behaves, and the model moves across that map with an ability that genuinely deserves respect.
That ability produces something people mistake for knowledge. When the training data carries strong, consistent signal on a topic, the most probable next words happen to also be accurate ones, and the model performs like an expert. When the data is thin or contradictory or absent, the model does the only thing it can. It generates the most plausible continuation, and plausible is not the same as true. The system was optimized for the first quality, not the second. It will produce a fabricated statistic, an invented source, a court case that never existed, all in flawless, confident prose, because from the inside it cannot tell the difference between what it knows and what it is inventing. It has no inside. It has a probability distribution.
This is why the honest word for the failure is not error. It is confabulation. The machine fills every gap with fluent invention, exactly the way a confident person keeps talking past the edge of their knowledge, except the machine never doubts, never pauses, never signals the moment it crossed from fact into fiction. The delivery is identical whether the answer is correct or completely made up, and that identical confidence is the single most important property of the current generation of these tools.
Now hold that reality against the public narrative. The volume around artificial intelligence has almost nothing to do with what the systems can currently do and almost everything to do with what belief is worth. An executive describing imminent superintelligence is describing a future that raises the value of what he is holding today. That does not make the claim a lie. It makes it a sales pitch, and a sales pitch deserves the scrutiny a sales pitch has always deserved.
The recent progress is real, and it is worth being precise about what improved. The reasoning got somewhat deeper. The delivery improved dramatically. These systems have been tuned to sound more natural, more measured, more human, and audiences experience that polish and conclude the intelligence underneath has transformed. Much of what transformed was the performance. The finish improved faster than the substance, and the finish is what people see.
Anyone who works with these systems daily learns the same discipline. Treat every output as a draft from a fast, tireless, occasionally delusional assistant. The leverage is enormous and completely real. These tools compress hours of work into minutes and their trajectory is steep. The value is captured by the people who verify what they produce and quietly destroyed by the people who trust it. Every organization currently being embarrassed by artificial intelligence made the same mistake. It confused the fluency of the output with the reliability of the output, and put a probability engine in a seat that required something that could actually be held accountable.
The technology is a genuine revolution and the systems are getting better at a pace that deserves attention. They are also, still, at their core, language models tuned to sound human, confident in exactly the moments they should not be. Both of those things are true at once, and the people who understand that hold an advantage over the people selling the story and the people buying it.
